Blocked ears, muffled hearing, itching or a feeling of fullness – impacted ear wax is one of the most common reasons patients visit an ENT specialist. At Dr. Mitva ENT Clinic, ear wax is removed safely under direct vision using an otoscope.

Why not just use ear buds or home drops?

Cotton buds usually push wax deeper and can scratch the ear canal or injure the eardrum. Ear candles have no proven benefit and cause burns. Over-the-counter drops can soften wax, but if the wax is impacted, drops alone often make the blockage feel worse.

How ear wax is removed at the clinic

• Examination first – the ear canal and eardrum are checked to confirm the blockage is wax and not an infection, fungal debris or a foreign body.
• Instrument removal or suction – wax is lifted out gently under magnified vision. No blind syringing.
• Softening drops if needed – very hard wax is sometimes softened for a day or two, then removed at a follow-up visit.
• Hearing check – if hearing does not return to normal after removal, an audiometry test can be done to look further.

When to see a doctor about ear wax

• Blocked sensation or reduced hearing in one or both ears
• Earache, itching or ringing (tinnitus)
